We’re announcing today that Sir Richard Greenhalgh is standing down from his role as chair, having served an incredible 20 years on our board of trustees.

Richard has been with us for more than half of our history and has skilfully guided BYO through difficult times (including the Covid pandemic), overseen recent big periods of change as we’ve expanded and grown our programmes, and witnessed thousands of young professionals launch their careers in opera. He was knighted in last year’s King’s birthday honours for services to education.

Chief executive Anna Patalong says:

“Richard has given so much of his time and energy to BYO over the years and we’re incredibly lucky to have had him as our chair. He’s been a huge part of our success and on a personal level he’s been a cherished mentor and voice of reason since I took over as chief executive.”

Sir Richard Greenhalgh says:

“I have always loved opera, and so it has been an honour to be involved so closely with the UK’s national opera training company over the last two decades. This is a very dynamic time in their history and I’m excited to hand over the baton to a new chair when they’re appointed.”

Our president, Dame Sarah Connolly, adds:

“Richard has been there at every single BYO event, from galas to committee meetings – his dedication has made a great impact on the UK’s opera industry and will be felt for years to come. I want to thank him on behalf of BYO participants past, present and future, and he will be much missed.”

Richard’s departure means that we’re now looking for our new Chair – someone who can guide our strategy and fundraising and develop relationships with industry partners and beyond. If you think that sounds like you, find out more about the vacancy. The deadline for applications is midnight on 14 April.
