L'elisir d'amore

Here’s the second in our series of opera-themed cocktails that you just might be able to make out of stuff that’s lying around at the back of your kitchen cupboards. This one is named after the Donizetti opera because, apparently, the honey is an aphrodisiac. Who knew?

ingredients

  • 3 basil leaves

  • ice

  • two shots of gin

  • 1 tsp of lemon juice

  • 1 tsp of honey syrup (just mix equal parts honey and hot water, stir until dissolved and let cool)

  • soda water

method

  • muddle the basil leaves, lemon juice and honey syrup in a shaker

  • add ice and the gin

  • shake

  • strain into a martini glass and top up with soda water

  • garnish with some lemon or basil
